About wireless enterprise activation
Before proceeding with activation, ensure that you have the BlackBerry Enterprise service with your wireless service provider. Contact your wireless company to be sure that your account is provisioned for BlackBerry Enterprise service. This is different than standard BlackBerry service.
If you do not have an Enterprise data plan provided by the wireless carrier, read the Knowledge Base article on How Do I Activate BlackBerry Using The Enterprise Activation application?
Wireless enterprise activation allows you to activate your handheld on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server without having to connect your BlackBerry device to your personal computer with cable or cradle.
If you enable BlackBerry Enterprise wireless services on your mailbox using HostPilot® Control Panel, you will receive an email with your activation password. You will use this password on the handheld to activate the service for your device, as in the instructions below.
Enabling wireless enterprise activation
-
You must enable BlackBerry wireless services on the mailbox using HostPilot® Control Panel. Read the Knowledge Base article on How do I enable BlackBerry wireless service for the user? for more information. You can find this information in HostPilot > Services > Mailboxes > Display Name of the user > Exchange > BlackBerry (in Optional Services):
-
Within a few minutes, you should receive an activation email with the activation password. Please use your regular email application (such as Outlook or Outlook Web Access) to open this email.
-
On the handheld, open the Enterprise Activation program.
Depending on the model, navigate to:
-
Options > Enterprise Activation, Options > Advanced Options > Enterprise Activation
-
Settings > Options > Advanced Options > Enterprise Activation
-
for Blackberry OS6: Home Screen > Setup > Email accounts >choose Enterprise. If it doesn't allow to choose Enterprise, navigate toHome Screen > press BlackBerry button > Open Tray > Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > Enterprise Activation.

-
Type the appropriate email address and activation password that were provided in the activation email and click Activate.

About the password: This activation password is used only to activate your mailbox. The password is invalid after five unsuccessful activation attempts, and if you do not activate your handheld within 48 hours after the password is created, the password expires and cannot be used. When the handheld is successfully activated, the password is removed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. You can always generate a new activation password in HostPilot > Blackberry > Display name of the user.
-
After you choose Activate on your handheld, your device sends an activation request email to the user's email account. This email contains information about the handheld such as routing information and the handheld's activation public keys.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends the handheld an activation email response that contains routing information about the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the server's public keys. -
Device and server establish and verify keys.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the handheld establish a master encryption key. Both the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the handheld verify their knowledge of the master key to each other. If key confirmation succeeds, the activation proceeds and further communication is encrypted. -
Service books are sent. You can now send and receive messages on the handheld.
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server sends appropriate service books to the handheld, such as the messaging service book, wireless calendar service book, and browser service book. -

Requirements
To use the BlackBerry wireless activation with BlackBerry® Enterprise server, you must have:
-
BlackBerry handheld software version 4.0 or later. To check the version of the client software installed on your handheld, open Options > About.
Note: If you need to upgrade your handheld software to version 4.0, please contact your wireless carrier and request the latest client software for your handheld.
Please note that the 900 series handhelds (such as R957) have a different versioning system for the software. On 900 series models, version 2.7 is equivalent to version 4.0 on newer devices.
Important: Ensure that you are running the latest software for your device. You may check this on the BlackBerry website or with your wireless carrier. -
BlackBerry Enterprise service with your wireless service provider.
Good wireless signal strength. You must ensure that there is sufficient wireless coverage present when the Wireless Enterprise Activation is attempted. To check signal strength, go to the Options > Status page on your handheld and check for a value greater than -90db. The smaller the number, the better.
Important notice about Enterprise Activation
Prior to performing enterprise activation, please check if you have ANY data on the device (for example, some calendar items or contacts that had been added to the device before you decided to use BlackBerry Enterprise Service). If this is the case, we strongly recommend backing up existing data to prevent possible DATA LOSS during enterprise activation. For instructions on backing up your data, refer to the following BlackBerry Knowledge Base article or contact your Wireless Provider for more information:
